U.S. 59 Bridge to Shut Down

The Kingwood area faces a major traffic upheaval this spring, and Texas Department of Transportation officials are still working on plans to make the experience as bearable as possible for drivers. In late February or early March, TxDOT will shut down the southbound main lanes of the U.S. 59 bridge over the San Jacinto River, just north of Humble. The southbound bridge will be replaced due to bridge scour, damage caused to the bridge's columns by shifting sand and gravel around the structures. Plans for traffic control during the four-month project are still being finalized, TxDOT spokesman Danny Perez said Tuesday. "We want to minimize the impact on the traveling public," he said. A more detailed plan for the closure will be released soon, and drivers can keep up with construction progress at HoustonTranStar.org, Perez said.
